Week 4, we want more!
This week we settled in and started teaching at our new schools in Belize City! On Tuesday our new teaching pairs met with the school principals and introduced ourselves to the teachers and students. For our new schools and teaching pairs, we have Emma and Siobhan at St. Luke's Methodist School, Ali and Britt at James Garbutt Seventh Day Adventist, and Josh and Vivian at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic School. The students are all absolutely wonderful and seem super excited to have us here!We finished off the first week with Secondary coming to Belize City from Dangriga for a visit! Together we did the annual Cancer Walk, which began in Ladyville and ended 15km later in Belize City! The weekend was a great time to catch up with Secondary, relax, and get ready for the busy week ahead. And now an update from each teaching pair!Emma & Siobhan: It was a great first week in Belize City for Emma and Siobhan! We began teaching at St. Luke’s Primary School, specifically in their Standard 5 and 6 classes. We taught Peer Influence as our first lesson, and we’re immediately impressed by how receptive and welcoming our students were. We moved on to our bullying lesson on Thursday. One class decided to have each student create an anti-bulling sign to be posted in the classroom, which we were so excited to be surprised with on Friday! Self-esteem was our final lesson of this week, ending each Friday class with Warm&Fuzzies for each student! After already learning so much about students, we can’t wait for another 2 weeks of teaching and playing at St. Luke’s!Josh & Vivian: This week we began teaching at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Primary School! On our first day we taught bullying to 3 different classes, and organized our schedule for the rest of our time here with the principal. Our school was extremely welcoming, and we love how engaged and excited the students are. We continued the week with lessons on Self Esteem, Peer Influence, and Abuse and Health Relationships with our classes between Std. 4- Std. 6. On Friday, we taught our last lesson to the Std. 6, as they continue with a final review week next week and prepare for their final exams. We absolutely love teaching at St.Ignatius, and can't wait for the next 2 weeks!Ali & Britt:We finally arrived in Belize City, after being in Orange Walk for 3 weeks. We absolutely love teaching at James Garbutt Seventh Day Adventist school. We are teaching four classes, two standard 5’s, one standard 4 and one standard 6. During our first day of teaching we had the opportunity to be apart of an anti-bullying parade. The entire school walked around the streets of Belize City carrying bullying pledges while a police officer lead some engaging chants about bullying. We finished the week teaching peer influence, bullying and drugs and substance abuse. We can’t wait for the next two weeks with the students!
