Lots of fun in week one!

It's been a great first week here in Punta Gorda! We flew into Belize City and got to experience the infamous 7 hour bus ride to PG. PG is in the Toledo district - the most southern part of Belize, and there are about 5000 people living in the town. Laura and Kieran are teaching forms 1, 2, and 3 (the equivalent of grades 9, 10 and 11) at Toledo Community College. This week they covered conflict and discrimination, peer pressure and healthy sexual relationships. School starts at 7:30 and it's a short walk from our guesthouse in Punta Gorda. Mo and Avery are teaching forms 1 and 2 at Julian Cho Technical High School, which is a 40 minute bus ride away. They get up at 5:40 to catch their 6:00 am bus. So far they have taught drugs and alcohol, consent and abuse, and healthy sexual relationships. We start our days with a delicious baked good from Norma's bakery next door. We're obsessed!!! We eat lunch at school and have been trying out all the local restaurants in PG. So far our favourites have been enchiladas, curry chicken, and of course Belize's classic stew chicken with rice and beans! We're still adjusting to the heat - our first day here felt like 43 degrees C with the humidity. We're sad to say goodbye to Nicole our program director today, but we're so thankful for all her help in getting us settled and oriented here in PG! Today is Mo's 22nd birthday and she is so excited to get to spend it here in Belize! We're looking forward to our second week of teaching! xoxo the secondary team
