Another week, another walleye

Hello, hello!Man, time is weird concept here in Pickle Lake. Everything seems slow and comfortable (aka Pickle Lake Time), but we are simultaneously finding ourselves running out of it so quickly! Only 1.5 weeks left in this lovely town. The Kindergarten class with their friendship chain! We did a lot more teaching this week, especially with the younger kids. Some favourite moments were:

  • Teaching hygiene to the Kindergarten Class. We learned how to wash our hands properly, as well as cough and sneeze into our sleeve. We also did a cool experiment to see what happens to an egg (aka our TEETH!) when it soaks in Coke.
  • Teaching puberty to the 4,5,6’s!! We are pleased to announce that they all survived on Puberty Island during a game of Survivor.
  • Talking about decision making with the 6,7,8’s. It was a funny class, as it featured video clips from Ellen and the Big Bang Theory! We also gave out Wordles to all the kids that were based on warm fuzzies their classmates wrote for them.

Outside of the classroom, we kept busy with playing dodgeball (we had about 30 kids out this week!), running our leadership program with the high school kids (who are helping plan a Spring Fling Carnival on Saturday, June 1st: STAY TUNED!), participating in the Floor Hockey Showdown 2.0, as well as helping out with the school sleepover on Friday night. Some of the crew at Wednesday night Dodgeball! The Floor Hockey Showdown on Friday was quite the event! All of the students paid to either watch or participate. The first 40 minutes was a gruelling battle between the local police officers, paramedics and school staff (plus Lindsey) and the high school students. Since floor hockey is the most popular hobby around here, the staff, emergency personnel, and Queen’s students got creamed. It was a little embarrassing, but we redeemed ourselves against the younger kids!Floor Hockey ShowdownWe also volunteered to help Miss Johnson (one of the Crolancia teachers) with the school sleepover on Friday night!  There was never a dull moment, between cooking, cleaning and running/supervising activities. A highlight of night was the Amazing Race challenge, which included a water balloon relay where students passed the balloon with by holding it between their chin and chest, a no-hands spaghetti eating contest, three legged races, and a run-and-dress relay. We never cease to be amazed by the sheer amount of energy these kids have, but overall, it was a fun filled event for all!P1090506 P1090495School sleepover shenanigansToday we were lucky enough to have more Pickle Lake tourist adventures. After checking out the town Pitch In (aka spring clean-up) BBQ, we met up with Mayor Roy Hoffman for some fishing. Sandra had the first catch of the day (a large stick) but before long we were all catching pike as fast as we could release them! Roy managed to snag a couple walleye, which we took back home and cooked for dinner. As per the Roy’s suggestion, we coated it in flour and fried it up – think “Fish-and-Chips-Style-Fish”. YUM! Along with the bannock dogs that are ever so popular here, we are certainly getting our fill!Fishing with SaikoAnother Pike...In other news, Sandra has become quite good friends with Nurse Betty at the Pickle Lake Clinic, due to the fact that she had strep throat all last week. Don’t worry though; she is well on her way to a full recovery!!  Lindsey, on the other hand, no longer has the flu and has regained her appetite…which came in handy at all of the free BBQ’s with ice cream this week!Until next time,Team PickleSunset photo of the week :)
