Life's a beach...Adam Beach!!!!

Figured we would post an update since we have had a very exciting week. After a long weekend which involved some fishing (on ice and in a t shirt!), campfires, sunshine and seeing the Northern Lights stretched out across the sky, it was eventually time to put the sunglasses away and get down to business. This week we moved on from sexual health to substance abuse, a much tougher topic to teach about but still very important. We taught about alcohol and smoking, which ended up taking all four days this week due to the large number of questions from kids and attempts to make lessons interactive through our differentiated learning approach!Burning some energyThe Ice starting to break up.Yesterday (Wednesday) was a day of surprises. The first came when we woke up to freezing cold weather and a snowy morning! Not an ideal situation for May but I guess on the bright side it keeps the black flies away for now. Things improved though as there was also a good surprise to come our way in the mail. More specifically we got a great care package from Fabienne Speiss (incoming QHO director yeye!!!) who sent us a truly wonderful assortment of frozen meats and fresh fruits/veggies (the two things which we were sorely lacking). So we have thanks to her for preventing us from getting scurvy and ending our daily carb loading of oatmeal, sandwiches, rice and pasta! After teaching about the 4 food groups and the importance of a balanced diet we can finally begin to practice what we preach. The most exciting news of the week however is that today was the career fair, an annual event here in webequie, where we got to meet special guest star Adam Beach!!! (A Canadian movie and TV star with a Wikipedia page and everything). After waiting in line for what seemed like forever with all the ladies of the community and Kat trying to get a peak at him, we finally got to take a few photos with him. Later on we also got the chance to speak with him later about QHO and he was impressed by the program having grown up on in an isolated Northern community himself. Although he was the main attraction of the career fair, there was a lot more going on. A large number of companies with various opportunities had come to Webequie with information. There was also some community members selling some saweet swag which we decided was a great way to support Webequie economically (see picture below). The man himself!Kat's outfit just quadrupled in valueLook ma, Beaver Hands!Lots of stuff coming up this weekend with the kids so we gotta jet but more updates to follow.Later Days,Kat and Evan
