Time Flies

Wow, we cannot believe week 2 has already come and gone!We were super excited to start our first week of teaching, focusing mostly on nutrition and the importance of physical activity for grades 1-8, while also talking about self-esteem and healthy relationships in the high school. On Monday we were in the grade 4, 5, 6/7, and 8 classrooms discussing nutrition- they loved watching videos about what NHL athletes eat in a day! We were also given the opportunity to attend a traditional sweat lodge in the evening, which was an incredible spiritual experience. Megan lived up to her QHO award as Sweatiest Girl and was definitely one of the sweatiest people there. On Tuesday we were with some of the younger grades, teaching the different food groups and the importance of a balanced diet. A big shout out to Laura and John for their awesome nutrition game, it was a major hit with everyone! We tried our hand at some beading after school, Megan attempted to make a beautiful flower, while Katie had to switch to the easier option and make a keychain.IMG_7367We were in the high school on Wednesday, where we had a more discussion-based conversation on self-esteem and healthy relationships. We think it was a very practical lesson that went over very well! Self-love is so important. After school we had some girls-only gym time where we introduced our favourite game, bench ball!On Thursday we talked to grade 6/7, and 8’s about diabetes, and held our first after school cooking club! We made some delicious healthy peanut butter granola bars and touched on the importance of fresh ingredients   and knowing what’s in your food!IMG_7377On Friday we were lucky enough to sit in on the schools first youth general meeting. The grade 6/7’s has made some very impressive proposals for a new arena, and we enjoyed hearing ideas for different activities to bring to the community.IMG_7107On Saturday we went on a long walk with some of the kids where they showed us what they like to call Mount Webequie, and helped us climb to the top! Later that evening we held our first girls night at the school, consisting of decorating cupcakes, painting nails, and a few games of bench ball!IMG_7388Best of luck to the grade 8’s as they head down to Toronto for the week, we look forward to hearing about your adventures! That's all for now!-Katie and Meg xoxoP.S. Happy Mother's Day to our mothers, their mothers - and all the mothers out there! Thank you for all your support and unconditional love, we miss you dearly!
