Week Two in Berbice
Nick who?? We started off our week without Nick. It was sad to see him leave but we were really excited to become more independent in Guyana and start teaching. Even though we’ve only been teaching for one week, we feel comfortable teaching together and teaching grade 6-9 students. The topics that we have taught so far are an Introduction to Mental Health, Peer Pressure and Self Esteem, Bullying, and Healthy Relationships and Abuse. The students here are very well-behaved for the most part, and seem interested in what we’re teaching. The teachers and Headmasters also seem very grateful to have us teaching in their schools which makes this entire experience meaningful.
Aside from teaching, we have spent even more time getting to know our Guyanese friends at the Youth Space. We hang out with them every afternoon, and we taught them how to play Spike Ball and they’ve taught us some of their games. On Saturday we went to the beach with them and it was super fun. We are also exercising every day and playing a lot of euchre. Overall, we’re all doing really well and enjoying Berbice. Caitlin is motivating all of us to work out every day and has showered approximately twice in the past 2.5 weeks. Logan is our source of food and feeds us every night by whipping up full meals out of nothing. He’s also learning how to live with three girls and to put the toilet seat down. Isabelle is the master of all card games, except for euchre… we’ve finally found her weakness. Hannah is working on her fear of the dark. Night is scary to her but Logan has assured us all that he can protect us from any Berbice night scaries. We’re having an amazing time and can’t wait to see what the next few weeks have in store.
