Week One in Berbice

We’ve had an amazing first week! Our Initiative Director Nick helped us get oriented in Berbice and we have been getting to know some of the community by spending time at the youth space with local youth. We’ve learned a lot about the Guyanese culture and customs, and are getting more used to sharing the road with the goats and cows! Berbice wakes up at 6 am so we do too, and we have filled our free time with exercise and many card games.

Last week, we approached many different schools in the area to build our schedule and we started teaching on Tuesday of week two. Our first day of teaching was very busy but went very well! Both pairs began with an introduction to mental health, which the students seemed to enjoy learning about. After introducing our list of topics, the students got the chance to share with us the ones they are most wanting to learn about, which will help us to better plan our future lessons with them. The Berbice team is very excited to continue facilitating discussions about health and can’t wait to get to know the students better!
